Wrapping Up 2007

With the holidays, there is always some sort of crazy rush — even if things are (oddly) dead quiet at work. Thankfully, technology came to my rescue this year, even if the shipping fees were ridiculous (yes, it looks like all my gifts bought online have arrived at their destinations in time! This is fantastic news, partly because I will never again try to ship things myself… let the online companies just ship directly).

I’m spending the holidays with my “adopted family” in Bakersfield (I’m the geeky kid sister they never had). I’m super happy they have wifi, and we brought an XBox with us, so we’ve already upped the technology level significantly. I’ve even hooked up my friend with a Facebook account finally!

Except, Facebook is now so last year according to an article by Bobbie Johnson at The Guardian. I’m not sure if I agree with this favorites list… of course, that means I have to come up with my own list, then. I’ll work on that this next week while things are, likely, dead quiet at work. Either that or it’ll be total insanity.

Wired has a great Top 10 Startups Worth Watching in 2008. I’ve previously mentioned 23AndMe which I can see taking off in the next few years, especially once the cost goes down (even though the $1,000 price tag is already a bargain, considering what they are offering). FON (a wifi sharing community) is something I’m very excited about, and have been for the past year… I’m a member of the FON community, and can’t wait to tap into it when I travel on business. (T-Mobile Hotspots? So last year…)

I don’t really consider BitTorrent or LinkedIn in the start-up category anymore, but they definitely are worth watching in ‘08 with the changes they’ve already made, and are likely to make in the next year. It’s interesting how social and business networking, at least for me, is blurring… My LinkedIn contact list actually looks pretty similar to my Facebook friend list.

And BitTorrent and the P2P world has so much potential, that I’m really excited to see where we go with that… as long as the entertainment industry can get with the program and stop thinking about technology and new media in such an antiquated way.  But more on that later.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to those that celebrate!
