Careers, Cameras, and Conundrums
The Big Apple… And No, I Don’t Mean Makers of the iPod
I’m in NYC on business this week. It’s my third trip this year, and my third trip to NY ever. And what can I say about the city? I love it. It’s awesome. And it’s so very different from Los Angeles.
I have a five year rule about living somewhere. After five years, I need to move. Yes, I haven’t had that many five year increments in my life yet, but I moved around a ridiculous amount when I was a little kid, and got used to it. When my family was nearing the five year mark in Colorado, I begged my parents to consider moving to another state (long story short: we didn’t move).
I’m at just over three years in LA now, and have been considering my next city. My list includes NYC, and every time I come out here, I want nothing more than to live here.
My problem is — like many, really — I have no idea what I ultimately want to do. Is the UN hiring? Peace Corps might work. But would Google take me? Wait a second, didn’t I move to LA to be a writer? And what about starting my own company…
I like what I currently do, but market research isn’t ultimately for me. Everyone I work with gets that. I’m a geek, with a humanitarian streak, that happened to fall into market research.
So the questions I am posing to myself are:
- What do I want to do next?
- Where can I do that best?
- Should I really let my career drive where I live?
Who knows what the answers are, or if I’ll ever figure them out. But did I mention I love NYC? Love it, man. And maybe that’s enough right now.
Cut the Cables!
How is it that digital cameras still come with their own specialized cables? What about the 5-pin connector? Is there something wrong with it? Does using a special multi-output cable that is bulky and just flat-out inconvenient make the camera special?
C’mon, guys. Get with the program. I don’t want another cable to carry with me! Almost every gadget I have has a different cable and/or charger, and it’s getting really obnoxious.
Of course, I could get an iPhone and immediately eliminate at least one cable and gadget, but maybe two or three. But 1) the price is a little steep, 2) locked in with AT&T? I don’t have anything against AT&T but the locked in part… not a big fan, and 3) no flash support. And the camera is OK on it, but it’s 2 mega pixels? Can I get just a couple more, please?
Ah well. The cabled life we lead… maybe one day we can live in a wireless world. When is that Powercast charger coming out, anyway?
